The German federal cabinet approved the blockchain strategy drawn up by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi) and the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) with the involvement of the other ministries. The strategy should set the framework for innovation based on blockchain technology – tapping into its potential and preventing its abuse – under the principle of technological neutrality. The energy sector is one focus of the blockchain strategy, in conjunction with the digitalisation of the energy system transformation. From the view of the finance ministry, the issuance of currency and the further development of the internet are major factors to be considered.

Measures are presented in five fields of action:

  1. Ensuring stability and stimulating innovation: Blockchain in the financial sector
  2. Advancing innovation: Promotion of projects and real laboratories
  3. Enabling investment: Clear, reliable framework conditions
  4. Applying technology: Digital management services
  5. Disseminating information: Knowledge, networking and cooperation
